Middle School Academics

Providing a bridge between a nurturing elementary school and competitive high schools, Middle School is known for its active learning environment, its varied course offerings, and its high academic standards. Teachers at the Middle School focus on three main goals for their students: to think critically and creatively to solve problems, to develop the ability to work with others, and to develop the self-discipline needed to complete assignments in a timely and responsible manner.

The Middle School's warm, personal, and relaxed atmosphere grows out of a strong mutual respect between teachers and students. Classroom goals are clearly defined, with realistic expectations set for all students. Interdisciplinary classes and flexible daily schedules create further opportunities for student development. An advisor monitors each student's progress, and communication with parents is open and frequent.

A balanced curriculum of math, English, science, social studies, Spanish, art and physical education makes up only part of each student's day. Grade-level interdisciplinary classes such as Connections, Science/Math, CORE, Workshop, American Studies, and Engineering further enrich the academic program at the Middle School. A broad range of challenging yet exciting electives is also offered, including drama, carnival games, C02 racers, yearbook, set design, cooking, flag football, guitar, jewelry making, basketball, collage, among others.

The Middle School's information center/computer lab is an integral part of the facility, providing students a place to work, study, or research. Activities abound at the Middle School. Academic opportunities open to Middle School students include MathCounts, science fairs, student-run businesses, debates and numerous projects and simulations. The Middle School sponsors as many athletic teams in soccer, volleyball, basketball, track and tennis as there is interest from the students. The arts are encouraged with theatrical stage productions and talent shows that play to packed houses each year.

The Middle School is made up of grades six through eight where students meet in classes of varying sizes, generally with 15-20 students in each class. Classes are held in the Middle School building located at 600 NW 44 Street, with school times from 8:20 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Students often arrive as early as 7:45 a.m., and after-school study hall ends at 5:50 each school day.
