After school hours at the Middle School are often quite busy. Although students are rarely required to remain after school, they often do anyway as they take part in various activities and opportunities.
Working with teachers
—Classes end at 3:30, but teachers are available to work with students in their classrooms until 4:30 every day except Wednesday. During this time students often study for tests or quizzes, complete tests they began earlier in the day, receive extra help, or make up work they missed during an absence.
Staying in study hall
—The teacher-supervised study hall provides parents with an extended day opportunity for their children. This drop-in study hall is available from the end of school until 5:50 p.m. each regular school day. Students work in a relatively quiet environment where they complete homework or read as they wait for their rides or for their athletic practices.
Practicing athletics
—Westminster School sponsors competitive teams in volleyball, soccer, basketball, tennis, and track, based on interest. Westminster-sponsored athletic teams strive to follow the School’s philosophy of providing teams which are balanced, open to all Westminster students in the grade, and coached by School employees. The athletic practice times vary with each grade, with some practices beginning immediately after school, others beginning at 4:40 or 5:50, and some held at 7:00 a.m.
Participating in activities
—Students sometimes rehearse for plays after school or practice skits or presentations for academic or non-academic activities. MathCounts, an engineer-sponsored competitive math program for middle school students, meets twice each week, and students sometimes work after school to design or complete projects.
