Mission and Philosophy

Mission

The development of children's knowledge and understanding is at the heart of Westminster School's mission:

To educate children by engaging them actively in experiences that challenge students to solve problems as cooperative, confident, and responsible learners.

Philosophy

Westminster School believes that children are valuable and capable people. We celebrate them as individuals and recognize that out of the child’s experience comes true knowledge and understanding. We seek to provide an educational experience in which questions are encouraged, creativity and curiosity are nurtured, and academic skills are developed. We affirm that the process of a child’s education is far more important than its content and subscribe to John Dewey’s maxim, “An ounce of experience is worth a pound of theory.”

Westminster School is an informal, child-centered place where children and teachers know each other well and respect each other as individuals. We encourage people to try new things, appreciate their successes, and support and encourage them to learn when they are not successful. We value the freedom to make decisions and the importance of taking responsibility for what we do. Westminster is a place with high expectations for students and teachers and affirms that responsibility, cooperation, and hard work are keys to knowledge and understanding.

Westminster School believes strongly in the importance of a tolerant and diverse educational community. We recognize that the success of this community is based upon the support that exists between parents, students, and teachers, and that all of us seek what is best for our children.
